From President Maurie
For our meetings at Kew Golf Club we are required to email Hugo attendingrcnb@gmail.com to confirm our attendance and that of any partners or guests.  Vaccination status of each person will be checked by staff at the entrance and facemasks are required until you are seated for drink or meal.

Last week

Lots of smiles at our face-to-face meeting at KGC, a welcome change from Zoom. A social gathering and successful AGM. Was good to see ol’mate Jim Romanis again. We are hoping that he re-joins the club.

Looking ahead to 2022/23 we have some returning and some new people to help with managing our activities and projects. Congratulations Brian Lacy, our new President Nominee.

Rotary Youth Exchange 1993 - Dr Neil Cable

Dr Neil Cable - Rotary Youth Exchange 1993

Life in SA (South Africa, not your adjoining State) continues to bewilder and surprise. The COVID pandemic has dealt a nasty blow to many sectors of society, but the family and I have been blessed with good health, stable income and good times of togetherness through the various lockdowns and restrictions.

My surgical practice as a dedicated shoulder and elbow surgeon has had three major interruptions where no work was possible for 5-6 weeks at a time due to the hospitals being full of patients with COVID. We’re currently back to about 80% of our pre-COVID work as the numbers have really come down, but we’re all bracing for the probable 4th wave in December. I thoroughly enjoy my work and had major withdrawal symptoms when I wasn’t allowed to be operating.

Afghan Refugee and Environmental Support

Afghan Refugees

The club is discussing with two organisations possible support for new Afghan arrivals.

Australian Migration Education Service (AMES) say that they have sufficient clothing but would welcome cash or food voucher donations.  They can be lodged at <www.ames.net.au/about/make-a-donation>

We also asked if our experienced members could help with mentoring/settling in advice and the indications are that AMES would welcome that. At the club meeting on 11 November quite a few members showed interest in this type of support.

CHRISTMAS HAMPERS

As people come to BCO for basic food provision and toiletries we would love to pack this year's hampers with special items that people cannot afford.

We are wondering in your Rotary club would like to collect some items to assist.

Golf Report - Philip Island
Golf Report - Fellowship Weekend Philip Island

Saturday - Unfortunately we were only able to book for 9 holes and consequently we just had a social hit.

Sunday - Ambrose competition for the Hackers Trophy.

First team : Rowan McClean, Tony Wells and Geoff Steinicke on 68.3
An excellent effort with an average age of 82. It shows they are still young!

Second team : John Magor, Peter Elliott and Greg Ross on 68.7

Third team : Greg Matthews, Rob Hortin and Imre Lele on 71

Less than 3 strokes separated the three teams.

As usual, it was all keenly contested but enjoyed by all given the scenery, the wild life and bird life. The only drawback was that the golf club's lawn mower had broken down, making the going tough pushing the buggy down the un-mown fairways.

Geoff's Health Tip
That Morning Coffee is Good for Your Liver

With coffee assuming the mantle of Australia's most popular beverage, you will be pleased to know that a massive review of the scientific literature has found that drinking three to four cups of coffee a day provides the most health benefits.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, found benefits such as, reducing the risk for heart disease, multiple sclerosis, type 2 diabetes, liver disease, prostate cancer, Alzheimer's, and all cause mortality.  This study was supported by research published in Medscape Medical News 2021.
