Unwanted goods in good condition?

Are you upgrading equipment, downsizing or have a family member moving house?

Rotary North Balwyn will assess the need and arrange their collection and delivery to needy people in Melbourne. The groups being helped include Afghan and Ukrainian refugees settling in Melbourne after fleeing terror, local fire and flood victims, needy foreign students, and family violence victims.

This recycling project has sent more than 250 truckloads of donated goods that have helped many of families settle into new homes more comfortably.

The achievements have been as a result of the many generous donors, who have committed their redundant household goods to us rather than sending it to landfill.

If you can deliver to our depot at 417 Belmore Road Balwyn North, that saves Rotary meeting transport costs.

TVs, microwaves, laptops, vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, heaters, fans, blenders, juicers and bicycles are always in high demand.  All must be in working condition and of good appearance.

We also take refrigerators, washing machines,  dryers, items of furniture but need to check with potential recipients first to see if they are wanted because we have limited storage space. Unlike many charities Rotary takes bedding and linen if it is unstained and not torn.

The project is progressing well and as of April 2026, we’ve sent 250 truckloads of donated goods that have helped many families settle into their new homes. It’s thanks to many generous donors who have committed their redundant household goods to us rather than to landfill.

Currently, we don’t need more clothes, lamps or toys. What we do need are appliances that are in good working order. This includes working electrical kitchen items, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, microwaves and TVs as well as bedding (cushions, sheets, pillows, blankets and doonas), small furniture items (side tables, dressers) and household goods such as crockery, cutlery and cookware.

Bicycles of all sizes are popular, but they need to be clean and in working order.  We sometimes need beds and mattresses of various sizes and dining tables and chairs. Please don’t give us broken or dirty items. Everything must be in good condition and laundered or cleaned.

It would be great if you could drop items off to us at 417 Belmore Road, Balwyn North (adjacent to the Koonung Heights Uniting Church) as we have limited transport options to handle collections. Hours of opening are Saturday from 12 - 2pm and Tuesdays from 1pm to 3pm.

An option for larger items is that they could be transported at donor cost to a recipient’s home in the south-eastern suburbs by arrangement, or to the Bakhtar Community Organisation warehouse at 61 Heyington Crescent Noble Park early on Saturday for Sunday afternoons.

If that’s not financially possible for large items, donors should email RIMERN (Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network donatedgoods@rimern.org.au or EEN (Eastern Emergency Network) warehouse@easternemergency.org.au. Both are excellent organisations with trucks to collect donated items to help refugees and other needy people.
