Last Week
A little piece of Bastille Day for our last meeting!
Our "best dressed" winners for Bastille Day
Sam Hardikar

Guest Speaker - Sam Hardikar

Sam after completing his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from India, completed his Masters in Science at University of Illinois. An opportunity opened up to work with General Motors in Detroit designing the Corvette.

Marriage to Winita brought him to Australian shores in 1987 where he started his work journey with Melbourne University where he worked as an analyst for the Engineering department. The next stint was 5 years at Shell Australia as an engineer. A Full Bright scholarship to Winita at Yale University meant he had to move back to the US in 1992. That was a turning point in a change in career trajectories - from engineering to computers.

Sam worked on Wall street, New York for JP Morgan providing specialist technical support to the trading floor operations. After successfully completing her post-doctoral work, Sam and Winita returned to Australia in 1995. Sam then worked in a variety of computer consulting companies and was a key personnel on the building of the Transurban City Link project.

He then had an epiphany to let go of the corporate world and instead focus on achieving his dream of starting a business. But first he had to get his education to match the challenge he was about to undertake. At the age of 50, Sam enrolled at the Melbourne Business School and successfully completed the full MBA.  He was now ready to start his venture.

Breakfast Program 2022

Hi Everyone!

School Breakfast Programs have been a success with students at schools worldwide. In fact, studies have shown improved concentration and general
disposition amongst students involved in such programs.

A current program exists at one of our local primary schools, which we have assisted previously in other projects. We have been asked if we could assist with the program.

What is it?:  This program provides a hot brekky each Thursday.

Time Commitment: Thursdays before school. The program doesn't operate in school holidays. Whilst commitment is needed, if you're having holidays during term or have other commitments on particular Thursdays that's not a problem.

Cost: Nil

Benefits:

- Satisfaction with assisting young students
- A volunteer activity that does not require preparation before or afterwards!
- Being an Inspiration!
- Enthusiastic students and staff
- Off street parking at the school.
- Lovely 'thank you' cards from the students at years end ©

Where:         St Bridget's Primary, Sweyn St., Greythorn.

Tap Water
Mineral Water, Spring Water, Tap Water and Pure Water

Mineral water in Australia had its early beginnings at Hepburn Springs in central Victoria, where mineral baths, fountains and guest houses were established in the late 1800s.  I believe that on a summery Sunday in the early 1900s, there could be up to 8 trains bringing day-tripers to enjoy the healthy water direct from the springs.

It was the immigrant Italians and Eastern Europeans who extolled the virtues of mineral water and passed their enthusiasm onto others. Mineral water became so popular that 5 gallon containers were filled and carbonated at the springs and sent by train to resorts in Victoria and other states.

Unlike spring water, that is sourced close to the earth's surface, mineral water originates from deep down in the earth where carbon schists combine with water to produce carbonic acid that dissolves the rocks to produce soluble calcium, magnesium and iron compounds and the familiar bubbles of COշ.  The variation of minerals at each spring affects it's taste and people would travel from spring to spring assessing the quality based on taste.

But is spring water or mineral water healthy?  Certainly they are not unhealthy, provided they comply with the guidelines on water quality.  I have to say that I much prefer mineral water as an accompaniment to a meal.

On the other hand, Melbourne's tap water is one of the purest in the world and is at least 99.94% Hշ0.
