Steve Clifford CEO of SecondBite, delivered a most interesting presentation and was a very affable dinner companion.
 
SecondBite was founded in 2005 by Ian and Simone Carson. They and a committed group of friends visited market stalls in Melbourne to collect surplus food and supplied it to local charities. In that first year SecondBite rescued 655kgs of food. Fast forward to FY21, and it redistributed 24.3 million kgs of food, providing the equivalent of 48.7 million meals to people in need. Since 2005, it has rescued and redistributed more than 118 million kgs of food, providing the equivalent of 236 million meals.

         How to Reduce Your Risk of Developing Bowel Cancer
 
Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal, rectal and colon cancer, is the third most common cancer in both men and women in Australia and is more common in people over the age of 50.
 
In 2021 there were 5,322 deaths (102 per week) attributed to bowel cancer in Australia and 15,206 new cases diagnosed.      

In a study published in the Journal of American Medical Association, confirmed that what you eat and drink does affect your risk of developing bowel cancer.

  • Respect, believe and do not judge
  • Remind them they are not to blame
  • Provide choices not interventions
  • Empower them to make their own decisions
  • Let them know there is help available
  • Offer to make a call on their behalf
  • Continue to offer support and encouragement even if the person is not ready to accept help at the time
