From President Maurie

Last week

Thanks to Rowan again for enticing Sam Pang to entertain us. The members, friends and guests who attended – over 60 – enjoyed a laughter filled evening. Greg Ross as interviewer played his role beautifully. We are indebted to Sam and all the guest speakers who so generously give their time and skills.

I acknowledge the efforts of all who are contributing as organisers and volunteers for the various activities and rosters. Elsewhere you will read about the Golf Day fundraiser so it is fitting I give special mention to all who played or assisted in the running of the event. Neil Dalrymple and Grant King took on the big job for the first time this year and with the added expertise of Greg Matthews and Greg Cribbes, a very successful event was enjoyed by all.

RCNB Golf Day

Rotary Golf Day - Friday 18th February 2022 - a spectacular success.

Under clearing skies (thanks to Grumpy's connections....), a field of 124 congregated at Kew Golf Club by 7.30am for the annual Golf Charity event.

Breadstreet (David Winter) donated delectable pastries (lo-Cal...) as nourishment for breakfast and at 8am, the Ambrose golf commenced.

The course was in impeccable order, so no excuses were accepted - throughout the morning, screams of delight and derision, even sledging echoed around the course.

Afghan Families Update

AFGHAN REFUGEE FAMILIES SUPPORT

In addition to the 2100 new refugees already in Melbourne, 600 more are expected in the next two weeks!!

As explained at the meeting last Thursday,  Centrelink is log jammed and the new arrivals are unable to be processed in the normal time so that welfare benefits cannot be accessed.  Thanks to Doug Hawley of RC Canterbury we will be delivering 12,000 (no, that’s not a typo!) ready-made meals on Monday.

The collection of household goods, clothing, toys and furniture in our depot is growing.

Many thanks to Cris Yudi, Kinga Paulheim, Grant King and Joseph and Gina Yap for donating useable items and for Peters Sutherland and Downton for helping with collections/deliveries.

Dietary Recommendations for Rheumatoid Arthritis

A group of French rheumatologists led by Professor Jeremie Sellam from Saint-Antoine Hospital in Paris, discussed which diets patients with rheumatoid arthritis should prioritise in treating the disease.  According to Professor Sellam, these recommendations are the world's first set of dietary recommendations for patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

The discussion group was made up of rheumatologists in private practice, some who work in hospitals, others included nutritionists and registered dieticians.

Congratulations to Priya!
Many of you will remember our Rotaractor, Priya, whom we assisted during lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.

She graduated from Swinburne with her Master's Degree at the end of 2021 and I attended the ceremony.

This was a fantastic achievement as she overcame many hurdles to complete her Degree.

Very well done!!
