From President Maurie

 Last week

A happy 42nd birthday celebrated last Thursday thanks to having a room full of happy members, partners and guests, especially Areta and her (26th) delicious birthday cake, table decorations by Bronwen and the delightful guest speaker Hassa Mann accompanied wife Glenys.

We enjoyed a poetic introduction by the inimitable Greg Ross. It was also an opportunity to acknowledge the incredible contributions of our remaining Charter Members, Stan Hibbert, Geoff Steinicke, Marcel Muntwyler and Peter Cleary. Though Stan and Marcel were not at the meeting, Peter presented a comprehensive summary of Marcel’s outstanding contribution to NBRC.

Very sad news to learn of the death of past president John Mollison. Our thoughts go to Anthea and family. You will find a tribute to John, by Greg Matthews, in this Grapevine.

VALE - John Mollison
To all Members:-

You are no doubt aware that our Past member John Mollison passed away on Thursday night at Frankston Hospital.

John joined Rotary in 1986 and became a Friend of Rotary when he moved to Rye several years ago. During John`s long years of service he and Anthea hosted many Exchange Students at their beach house over the Christmas period .

He was a past Club President; a Paul Harris recipient; a member of District committees including an Assistant Governor. John & Anthea attended many Conferences and one of the first was in 1990 in Canberra. Anthea was a main player in our hosting of the Launceston Conference.

Birthday Night - Guest Speaker
Intro to Hassa Mann ... 12/5/2022

The club I love has history proud
From eighteen fifty-eight till now
Invincible Whites was once our name
And then the Fuchsias, how very tame!
With colours red and royal blue
The mighty Dees and Redlegs grew.
I started watching when just a boy
To go with Dad was my greatest joy
In fifty-five, six and seven
Three premierships – I was in heaven.

Marcel Muntwyler
Marcel  Muntwyler  - A Tribute

It is my privilege tonight to present this tribute to Marcel Muntwyler one of the 36 Charter Members of the Rotary Club of North Balwyn chartered on 8th May 1980.

Unfortunately, due to his present health situation Marcel is unable to join us tonight and I suggest this is most likely the first Birthday Dinner that he has not attended. Marcel has sadly indicated his intention to resign from Rotary on 30th June as a result of his health situation.

Marcel's Classification was EXTERNAL SUN SHADE AWNINGS and he soon became known as "THE BLIND MAN". In addition, because of his physical likeness to a famous film star he was nicknamed "GROUCHO" for with his glasses, moustache and cigar in mouth he could have easily doubled for the famous Groucho Marks.

Rotary Gardening Project

This week Neil and Rowan tackled a tsunami of couch grass that had prevented backdoor, backyard and clothesline access and buried the path.  The resident was delighted with the work.

There will be a second session soon to complete the clean up.

In the “before” pic Neil looks daunted but in the “after” pic, cap askew, he looks decidedly worn out.

Well done lads!

Geoff's Health Tip

Is Tempranillo the Healthier Red ?

While the antioxidants in red wine are believed to contribute to better cardiovascular health, researchers in Spain say the Tempranillo grapes used to make wine also contain significant levels of soluble fiber that assist in strengthening the heart. They have found that the fiber and antioxidants in the Tempranillo grape seem to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol better than other sources of dietary fiber, specifically oats and psyllium.

Regarded as the noble grape variety in Spain, Tempranillo grapes have slightly thicker skins compared to other varietals. Not only is this wine attractive in colour, the dark berry flavours with hints of vanilla, spice and everything nice, may bring an extra flare to your evening’s meal.
