From President Maurie

Last week

A good night was enjoyed by all at our final meeting for 2021. Our gratitude to Bronwen, Jane, Hugo, Peter C and anyone else involved in preparations. Our choir ensemble deserve special mention.

Their willingness to lead the carol singing and Jane’s rewrite of the 12 Days added to what was already a really good vibe in the room. So good to see 10 tables of happy members partners and friends.

ARHF Life Membership - PDG Greg Ross

Retiring Chairman (PDG Greg Ross) served on the Board for seven years, the last three as Chairman. Greg introduced 'Lift the Lid on Mental Illness' which was adopted by the Board and is now widely used in ARH promotion. A gifted speaker and entertainer, Greg used his talents to publicise ARH at every opportunity. The Board unanimously supported Greg for Life membership. It has been a pleasure working with you Greg - Congratulations!

Bunnings Doncaster - Barbecue Service

Bunnings BBQ!!

It’s quite exciting that our Club is the first off the rank with the BBQ at the opening of the new Bunnings store at Doncaster.

Unusually the BBQ with be in the underground carpark but we are assured that, with special ventilation, that won’t be a problem! On the contrary we will be well-positioned as all customers using the carpark will pass by the BBQ – and who can resist a Bunnings sausage!

Camcare Deliveries

Camcare – Home deliveries

Our Club answered the call from Camcare a while back to assist each week with contactless food home deliveries for certain of their clients.

With the relaxation of pandemic rules that process has concluded and all clients will be required to call personally for their food support. Last Thursday was our final run – by Greg C, Sue and Geoff H.

Our involvement with Camcare continues with weekly food collection from 2nd Bite, as well as occasional help with their kitchen garden producing home-grown vegetables. That garden is being expanded early next year and our Club has committed $1,000 to that project.

Interact News
Giving back through Interact
– the student-led initiative championing social justice in our local area
– Callum McNaught

As the festive season takes hold, Christmas trees are put up and lights decorate our lawns, this year we paused to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and found an example in Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs where a unique partnership is making a significant difference in the community.

From the time Isabelle Oh and Meththa Sumanasekara started year seven at Balwyn High School in 2017, Interact Club has been an integral part of Balwyn High School’s club system, committed to engaging with the local community through local Rotary Club activities. Interact Club predominantly works with the Rotary Club of Balwyn North in a unique and fruitful relationship where student-driven social justice ideas take centre stage. “We communicate through email a lot about what activities we want to run, then they reach out to the higher leadership teachers to see if that can be possible”, says Meththa.

Geoff's Health Tip

Cherries are Not Only a Treat, they are Healthy

I look at the boxes of cherries prominently displayed in the fruit and vegetable shop and think I would like to buy some of them, but the price seems expensive at $20 a kilo and think I will wait a bit longer for the local cherries to arrive. I have always been fond of cherries, remembering as a 12 year old I picked cherries on a property in Blackburn, not far from here, and they were 'free'.
Are cherries good for you?  My answer is that richly coloured fruits and vegetables are definitely good for you. This has always been the case and is especially true for cherries.
