Beautiful Zoom

We are creating a record of participants on Zoom to be sent to members as a momento of their Zoom meetings. it might also be useful for the annual report.

Some people do not position themselves close-up in the frame, some have back-lighting or distracting backgrounds and there is usually someone chatting, yawning or otherwise not paying attention. Therefore we need to set up for good screenshots.  You probably know  that under the video button on Zoom there is a settings option and that includes an appearance  "touch up” option (some of us need that desperately).

We are planning to carry it out at 5.45pm on 7 October
Team Rotaboars!
The Rotaboars Team are out walking and raising money for End Polio.

After two days we have completed 100kms and raised $817, which is brilliant.

(Our Rotaboar mascot has found a friend to walk with).

It would be awesome if you would like to support us either by joining the Team or giving a donation.

Thank you so much.

A Toast to the Dees
To the Dees of 2021 ... a Special Toast !

My son has now reached the age forty-five,
Simon’s always kept his Dees alive
Throughout the years without a flag
He has never let ambition sag.
In ’eighty-seven John Northey’s team
Gave us all real hope to dream

Robbie Flower finished his fine career
A man for whom we all could cheer.
From Ireland came Jim Stynes, Sean Wight,
They joined our team and reached great height.
As President, Jim stopped club strife
Then encouraged youth to ‘Reach for Life’

Two grand finals lost along the way
To the Hawks and Bombers, some dismay,
But more recently a culture shift
Paul Roos came in to give a lift
Naming Simon Goodwin as his heir apparent
He wanted succession to be transparent.

While there were many doubts expressed
After that two thousand eighteen prelim test
The Club stood strong, the players too,
Believing in what they all could do ...
And so it’s come to pass this year
That Demon fans once more can cheer.

The recruiting, fitness and a selfless style
Have given our coaches cause to smile
While off the field more changes came
Including a President of female name.
Kate Roffey now heads up the Board
While Gary Pert CEO, we applaud.

The whole footy world has come to embrace
A tall, gentle giant with hairy face.
As Captain of our team, Max Gawn
Has led with flair through calm and storm.
While the engine room, Viney, Oliver, Petracca
Have produced the goods through their hard yakka.

Geoff's Health Tip
Diagnose Hypertension at Home

High blood pressure, or hypertension, often runs in families. I remember that my father had high blood pressure and took the prescribed anti-hypertensive drugs available at the time. In the 1950s the effectiveness of these drugs was variable and there were occasions when his blood pressure dropped too low, and he felt faint.  My mother had low blood pressure as I remember there were occasions she had a small glass of brandy to 'pick her up', at least I thought low blood pressure was the reason.

At 45 years of age, my systolic blood pressure was 120, but at 60, and running a business, I was shocked to find it was tracking up near 200.  How could this be?  You felt well, you were active, didn't smoke, I was not overweight and had low cholesterol readings, yet further measurements over the next month showed readings over 180.  Was it genetics?

Have you heard of Nagaland
Have you heard of Nagaland?

Some of us reached for Google when told that our our friend and chief executive at Camcare, Pari Sanyu, is about to return her village in Nagaland – a State in north east India bordering on Myanmar and currently experiencing an influx of refugees. As members know, we continue to be heavily involved with Camcare through our gardening program, 2nd Bite deliveries and, more recently, contactless food deliveries to clients.

In responding to our good wishes Pari had this to say. “I am deeply grateful during my tenure at Camcare to have been introduced to the amazing Rotary network. I’ve even discovered that there is a local Rotary in Kohima/Dimapur in Nagaland in the 25 years that I’ve been away!  Will definitely connect with them. Rotary is this amazing force for good worldwide. Very best wishes to you and North Balwyn Rotary who have been alongside Camcare and our most vulnerable community members through many years.”

Regenerating Rotary
Our world is constantly changing and evolving, and it’s our ability to adapt and tackle challenges that sets us up for the future. Certainly, the past 18 months living in a COVID world has reinforced the need to adapt.

Footy Comp
Footy Comp FUNraiser

The skilful/lucky winners were announced last Thursday with the clear winner being – a load of FUN for everyone.

Thank you to all those who took part, with special thanks to Rob Hortin for sorting out the entries. Greg Ross took out the main prize by choosing his beloved Demons to win by a large margin. The stewards were required to do a re-count and discovered that Ann Kerr (whose name was not mentioned on Thursday) joined others who had correctly nominated the Norm Smith medal recipient. Sorry Ann.

A tough start

Despite my early challenges I’d say I’ve had a fortunate life. I was born in Nagyszollos near the Romanian border in 1944. It was part of Eastern Hungary. ‘Nagy’ means large and ‘szollo’ means grape; the area is an important wine district, which is probably where I inherited my appreciation of wine.

Hungary was absorbed into the German war machine when my father was in the Hungarian army, which of course became the German army. The war had a terrible impact on him. He refused to talk about it although he did tell my children some of the stories, which is how I learnt of his experience.

By December 1944 the Germans were in retreat. The Russians were traversing Hungary when my mother and I were in Budapest so we headed to the southern part of Germany. I don’t know the full details but on the morning of 13 February, 1945 my father was on a train bound for Dresden. Somehow, he learned that we were 100 kilometres away. He jumped off that train and travelled to meet us. That evening my parents learnt that 1,300 Lancaster bombers had dropped 35,000 incendiary bombs on Dresden, which wiped out 110,000 people. My father would have been killed.
My memories of the following years in European internment camps are scant but I do remember the Italian refugee camp with its layers of four-metre-high barbed wire and Italian widows dressed in black begging for food.

In 1946, Mum contracted TB and died. She was just 26. A year or two later Dad met a woman in the displaced persons camp in Germany and they married. We boarded a boat sometime in 1949 and arrived in Australia in December to be interned in Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre near Wodonga.
