Last week

Forty-eight members and guests at the meeting was great to see. It is unlikely anyone went home disappointed. Our guest speaker John Conte and business partner Joe Wilkinson delivered an absorbing presentation. As Peter Elliott has always said, “Never under estimate a fitter and turner”.

John contacted me next day and kindly donated a Snowgum gift pack to our club.

Last Gardening Session for 2021

Final Garden for 2021 with students

After a stop/start year with limited school involvement due to lockdowns, it was a pleasure to work with Ruyton students tackling a challenging garden in Deepdene last Friday.
This was the final student session for 2021. With guidance from Ann K, Tak, Friend-of-Rotary Ian and Geoff H two hours of weeding gave the disabled resident something to smile about. These before and after shots tell the story.

RIMERN - Afghan local aid

Some pictures of the contribution of North Balwyn Rotary FOR afghan refugees. These show Rowan with Haroon collecting donations of clothes shoes and toys for the afghanis currently staying in Melbourne hotels. Haroon is the representative for a group of approximately 145 afghanis, out of a total of 1300 afghanis who are  in Melbourne.

Other pictures show  a group of refugees at DIK who were eager to collect bicycles, wheelchairs, sewing machines, cushions sanitary products and some crockery.

ARHRF - Indigenous Health program

Australian Rotary Health Indigenous Health Scholarship Program

In 2020 and 2021 Rotary Club of North Balwyn sponsored Isabella Kruger, a young lady from the Gold Coast to study Medicine at Monash University.

Isabella is enjoying the breadth of experience she is receiving in her studies with a rural practice experience in country Victoria and rotating ward experience at Monash Medical Centre featuring Haematology, Oncology, Renal and Gastroenterology. Despite Covid 19 Isabella has been able to continue her studies uninterrupted.

We intend to continue our sponsorship ($2500 per annum) of Isabella (who has two years of study to go). You can follow Isabella's progress and see her photo at https://australianrotaryhealth.org.au/Programs/Indigenous Health Scholarship/scroll down to Victoria.

Geoff's Health Tip

Fermented Foods Optimise Health and Vitality

One of the most potent sources of nutrition are fermented foods. As well as being an ancient method of food preservation, fermentation is a natural process in which microbes, such as bacteria or yeast, convert sugars into acids or alcohol under anaerobic conditions.
Fermentation produces "good" bacteria called probiotics, which confer a wealth of benefits to intestinal flora when consumed, enhancing the health of your gut microbiome and boosting your immune system.

A healthy gut will boost disease resistance and energy levels. If you are interested in optimizing and maintaining your health and vitality, eating a nutrient-dense diet is critical and fermented foods are a good place to start.
