Recently my doctor suggested I have a scan of my hip replacements as it is more than 15 years since my right hip was replaced with a 'total hip athroplasty' (the official description).  The scan revealed that the hip joints were good, but there was evidence of osteoporosis and a further scan was necessary.
 
The scan, called a dual energy x-ray absorpitiometry (DEXA) system, revealed that my bone density was low and 'dem bones' were at a high level risk of fracturing.

  • Talk and listen to the older person
  • Respect, believe and do not judge
  • Remind them they are not to blame
  • Provide choices not interventions
  • Empower them to make their own decisions
  • Let them know there is help available
  • Offer to make a call on their behalf
  • Continue to offer support and encouragement even if the person is not ready to accept help at the time
