A great afternoon of fellowship as we celebrated the handover from PP Maurie Walters to President Sue McDonald. Our MC for the afternoon ( Bronwen Dimond) did a great job with keeping things moving and introducing our PDG Dale Hoy (and Maureen) to assist with the afternoon and officers from our fellow Cluster Clubs added to the atmosphere
It was a privilege to attend the North Balwyn Changeover yesterday, and to witness Sue’s induction as your next President. It was wonderful to see you all again, you are very special Rotarians and friends to me!
Well done on your year, Maurie, and all award recipients, and may you all continue to have good health and good humour to continue the great work you do. With special memories, Ros Horne
The Camberwell Sunday Market has been a consistent fundraiser this year. Out of 35 Sundays the market operated we were able to make a handsome profit of $16,308 - an excellent result.
I wish to thank all volunteers who participated, especially the early risers who braved the extremely cold winter mornings - colder than I can ever remember. Well done guys!
My special thanks to Joseph Yap who volunteered at least twice every month, and came to the rescue when we needed to fill a vacancy. Also thanks to Greg Cribbes who always did 6 hour shifts - quite a feat.
I have said before that the Market is a 'whole of club event'. It is not too onerous a task for all members to volunteer and join the regulars and meet Rotarians from other clubs as well as enjoy the atmosphere of the market.
OUT with the old and IN with the new at Carrical House
Thanks to the Community Service team at RCNB (take a bow Eileen and Estelle) and those who raised the money, our donation has provided a new Turbofan Digital Electric Convection Oven and Stand at Servant’s Carrical house.
The old oven and hotplate had well and truly passed their use-by date. CEO Amanda explained that, with such a small kitchen, the decision was taken to go for a larger stand-alone oven, with BBQ and frypan adequate for sausages and steaks.
I have written about 20 articles on dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Health Tips with most labouring the beneficial effects of eating dark green leafy vegetables, fruit, turmeric, high fibre diets and aerobic exercise, the gut-brain connection and the inverse connection between fibre and dementia that demonstrated for the first time, the beneficial effect of soluble fibre compared with insoluble fibre.
But it was an article that only recently appeared in the Medscape Medical News, that really caught my eye. The headline announced that in a new study of older adults, those who had received at least one influenza vaccination were 40% less likely than their unvaccinated peers to develop AD over the course of 4 years.
Lead researcher, Avram Bukhbinder, MD, McGovern Medical School at the UTHealth, Houston, Texas, told Medscape Medical News,"Influenza infection can cause serious health complications, particularly in adults 65 and older. Our study's findings ― that vaccination against the flu virus may also reduce the risk of Alzheimer's dementia for at least a few years ― adds to the already compelling reasons to get the flu vaccine annually."
If you are placed in a position of aiding an older person:
Talk and listen to the older person
Respect, believe and do not judge
Remind them they are not to blame
Provide choices not interventions
Empower them to make their own decisions
Let them know there is help available
Offer to make a call on their behalf
Continue to offer support and encouragement even if the person is not ready to accept help at the time
