    25 October 2021

From President Maurie

A week to remember for all sorts of reasons.

The fellowship weekend is taking shape now that the barriers are down. The Seahorse Motel, golf and restaurant bookings are secured and the group of 24 are ready to roll.

Remember to send your proof of Covid vaccination to John Rennie jre00743@bigpond.net.au
who is building our club vaccination register. I am hopeful this can be completed by Tuesday October 2. It is especially important for those going to Cowes. Venues have advised they want patrons to scan QR codes at entry.

Guest Speaker - Koichi Hara

Our Guest Speaker on Thursday 28th October 2021 is our second Youth Exchange Student Koichi Hara who was hosted by the Club in 1983-84.

Koichi was sponsored by Tokyo Rotary Club and spent 12 months with us whilst attending Trinity Grammar in Kew where amongst other activities he introduced Kendo  as a College sport.

Koichi was an outstanding and popular student and made a lasting impact on our Club.

He was awarded a Paul Harris Recognition prior to his return to Tokyo where he now lives with his wife  and son and is employed in an Executive capacity by the Mitsubishi Corporation.

Gardening Roster

After another year of lockdown  our Gardening Program has been unable to service our properties in our usual way, much to the disappointment of our owners and members alike.

However we are looking to finish off the year with some gardening jobs with a Rotary Members Team only as the student

participation is unavailable for the rest of 2021.

Please check the roster and offer some help to the small team we have available at the moment .

There are spaces for 5 on our roster, please fill it up.

Rotary Youth Exchange - Adri Rossini
Rotary Youth Exchange 1989 - Adri Rossini

Greg Matthews, one of my host-fathers when I was an exchange student in Australia, asked me to give an account of what I have been doing since I returned home (that goes back to 1989!). I’m not sure if he is discreetly trying to help me exercise my memory (since I turned 50 this year) or if he truly needs my testimonial for a kind of “historic file”.

Anyway, I was grateful for the invitation. Being a Rotary exchange student was a unique experience in my life so I decided to tell here events that were as important as this one.

Geoff's Health Tip
Horticultural Therapy to Improve Mental Health

The press has carried many reports on mental issues arising during the current pandemic. It has been reported that supporting clinics have been overwhelmed, not only in Australia but in most countries where the virus has taken hold.

I have no knowledge of the current treatments for mental health issues, but one area that might help the mentally ill, that many of us would not recognise, is the value of horticultural therapy in treating mental health issues.
