From President Maurie

It was good to see members initiating a follow up to Dorothy Gilmour’s Presentation on SAFE Families. Feedback from the breakout rooms was good to hear; a few questions raised with some members seeking clarification on what becoming an Ambassador Club actually involves.

Thank you Estelle, Ken, Deborah and Phil for the time and effort put in.

Rotary SAFE Families is not seeking donations but rather, champions from Rotary clubs across Australia who will spread the word and support others.

The 3 Rs

1. Recognise the signs of abuse
2. Raise concerns safely with the victim
3. Refer the victim to the appropriate support

Rotary Youth Exchange Student - Paulina Gorka 2008/9

Hello Greg.

Firstly, I want to say sorry for being late with the response. Michael (my son) is sick. I didn't have time to write anything. But now, I will try.

In 2008/9 I went on Exchange to Australia.

In 2011 I finished high school.

In 2012 I graduated organ school.

In 2013 I got my driving license.

In 2014 I graduated English Philology at the Wroclaw University.

In 2015 I started working as a receptionist in the hotel in Prudnik.

In 2017 I got married!!! (The Sofra`s and Matthews came for my wedding)

In 2018 I went to Australia (again) with my husband Lukasz.

In 2019 I gave birth to my son Michael (not Greg or Grumpy but MICHAEL!!!)

In 2020 Covid19 came to Poland.

In 2021 I decided to work as a teacher at primary school. Michael goes to prekindergarten.

That's all that I remember.

Home Garden Project - The Bite Size Garden

This might be of interest to some members.  Josh Moore came and talked to some club members, primarily the gardening team, about home gardens and composting about two years ago.

He is an independent film maker and proprietor of Nimble Pictures. Josh filmed interviews at the 2021 District Conference (including one of Neil Marshall taking about our award-winning gardening program) and produced our Vietnam video that just featured as an outstanding project on the Rotary International Zone 8 Conference.

Rotary Leadership Institute
Hearing for Learning Initiative

Program aims:

The Hearing for Learning Initiative July 2018 – June 2023 is a $7.9m community-based service enhancement program. It aims to integrate locally-based ear health project officers into existing services to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children with ear and hearing problems.

Over a four-year period, the program will work with 20 communities, employ 40 part time ear health facilitators, and screen 5,000 children aged 0-16 years. The goal is to work with communities to establish reliable, sustainable, culturally appropriate services that ensure every ear of every child is healthy and hearing every day.

The Initiative will operate as a Phase III stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial. This means it will assess the effect of a novel innovation (enhanced ear health services) and whether this improves children’s health and education outcomes. The innovation will roll out in ‘clusters’ of communities, selected randomly from a pool of 20. Random allocation makes it fair and removes the bias of factors that are not well-understood, but which may influence outcomes.

Hearing loss is not just about “ears”. Ear disease affects speech and language development, many of life’s enjoyments, and access to culture, education, and employment. Children with ear problems cannot hear properly – they have trouble listening and talking, and may behave badly because they misunderstand their parents, teachers, and friends. If left untreated ear disease can have a significant impact on a child’s development and entire life trajectory.

Program goals:    Work with up to 20 remote, rural or urban communities to establish reliable, sustainable, culturally appropriate services that ensures that every ear of every child is healthy and hearing every day.
  • employment -  40 ear health facilitators
  • certificate II training in ear and hearing clinical and education skills
  • mentoring and integration of support officers
  • deliver education programs to help identify children with hearing problems
  • 5,000 children aged 0 -16 years to receive ear and hearing assessments during the four year program

Geoff's Health Tip
Retrain your Brain to Eliminate Lower Back Pain

Many years ago a young doctor addressed our Rotary club on his experiences as a GP.  With just a few years out from graduating and with a strong will and desire to help people with their medical problems, he found great satisfaction in actually being able to see good results for his treatments. But there was one problem, the answer to which eluded him - chronic pain.

A common factor is that our bodies change as we age. Despite all our preferences and needs or wants, no one wants to have a chronic medical condition whether it is cancer, heart disease, diabetes, neurological disease, or chronic pain.

Yarra Bank Playground

A reminder that the Yarra Park Playground has, yet  again, been pushed back and will now take place on November 21st (Covid permitting) and there will be a letterbox drop the weekend before to get the message out.

Here is a link to a short video about the project. It's in a Dropbox but you should be able to open it without downloading it to your Dropbox account (for those who have one).
