Speaker:          Dr Ida Whiteman – Global Grants Scholar, Rotarian, Paediatric Cardiologist with international experience in Timor Leste, Nepal, PNG, and Zimbabwe.

Last week

We had initial bookings of 38 but sadly a few dropped out due to illness and isolation requirements. Graeme Bird presented a very interesting summary of his early years, family, professional career and community involvement in Apex and Rotary. So much achieved. We are very fortunate to have him in the club.

Thanks to all involved this weekend at Bunnings, Camberwell Market and The Lift The Lid for Mental Health fundraiser at Deakin.

Guest Speaker Dr Ida Whiteman
Guest Speaker  -  Dr Ida Whiteman
Topic - Journey of a Rotary Global Grants Scholar

Dr Ida Whiteman is originally from Warragul in Victoria.  A doctor for eight years, and an early career cardiology doctor working at the Monash Children’s Hospital, Ida has also worked, volunteered and conducted research in Papua New Guinea, Nepal, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Timor-Leste.

In 2014, Ida worked in Darwin where she was humbled by the difficulties faced by the Indigenous people of Australia. This experience made her realise that she wanted to further her skills beyond medical training and pursue a Master of International Health and Tropical Medicine at Oxford.

North Melbourne Rotary Club assisted her to achieve this in 2017 through arranging a Global Grant Scholarship.

On returning to Melbourne, Ida wanted to give back to the Club, to the wider Rotary world, and to the community, and so she joined Rotary North Melbourne in 2020.

Safe Food Handling On-Line Course at DO FoodSafely

DoFoodSafely - The Victorian Government training program

It’s essential that members refresh this certificate annually and it’s a requirement for attendance at all catering events including the Grand Prix

Proceed to the link https://dofoodsafely.health.vic.gov.au/en/

Read the source material and proceed to the assessment.

If you are confident, you can go straight to the assessment, but you will probably fail and have to repeat it!

Complete this assessment to test your knowledge and understanding of food handling and food safety in the workplace.

The assessment has 30 multiple choice questions which you must complete in one session. You need to get above 90 percent to pass and receive a certificate.

Completing all the topics in this course can help you pass the assessment.

Your name and an email address will be needed so you can receive your DoFoodSafely Certificate of Completion in an email sent to you and as a download to your computer.

The Department of Health Victoria does not retain your information once your certificate has been emailed to you.

We cannot provide you with a duplicate certificate.

Good Luck

Second Bite and Camcare
2nd Bite & Camcare - another supply-chain

Every Thursday at around 8.00 am, one of a small group of Club Members arrives at the 2nd Bite warehouse in Heidelberg to fill their vehicle with food stuffs and produce to take to Camcare in Boroondara.

Our Club has been running this weekly service for several years and were able to continue deliveries all through the COVID lockdowns.

Camcare are a community partner with 2nd Bite who are the major outlet from Coles for their ‘rescued food’ as it approaches expiry date or might otherwise be discarded. From the latest 2nd Bite newsletter - -
In FY21 we continued our upwards trajectory of rescued food with a staggering 24.3 million kg delivered to our 1,400+ community partners, up 7% on the previous year. That’s the equivalent of 48.7 million meals. And the icing on the cake? We prevented 26 million kg of greenhouse gas emissions

The two photos show the 2nd Bite warehouse collection point and Camcare’s food preparation room.

Afghan Update

Since mid-January, there have been 49 separate donations/collections by North Balwyn Rotarians from people wanting to assist.

The main constraint has been storage in the Dandenong area, and our approach to Greater Dandenong Council has now resulted in them offering an unused Scout Hall in Noble Park for Bahktar to use at no cost. The agreement will be for six months, with the possibility of a six months renewal. The facility should be available later next week, and that will enable us to ship larger items from our depot including furniture.

As a result of effective support by Bahktar, AMES has asked them if they will help with Ukrainian refugees, 600 of whom are expected on our shores soon.  Bassir has agreed to help and will link with the existing Ukrainian community to plan assistance.

Anyone with good quality items they do not require should contact Rowan McClean by email rowanmcclean@gmail.com in the first instance, and arrangements will be made to get the items to Bahktar.

Geoff's Health Tip

Olive Oil and the Prospect of Living Longer

In a study of more than 90,000 US healthcare professionals, consuming even a small amount of olive oil was associated with reduced total mortality.  The researchers compared men and women who rarely or never consumed olive oil to those who consumed more than 7 grams (two teaspoons) a day.  The results showed that the latter had a 19% lower mortality risk after a 28 year follow up.

Olives are not only rich in healthy fats but also in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, making them a powerful food in support of heart and metabolic health
